TABLA PLAYER (Leeds, UK) 


bhupinderloresIs a young and up and coming Tabla player based in Leeds, U.K. He is one of the leading disciples of the renowned Tabla maestro and Gharanadar of the Benares gharana, Pandit Sharda Sahai Ji, who is the direct descendant of Pandit Ram Sahai Ji, the founder of this Gharana.

He had been a student at the Leeds College of Music for a number of years after where he later completed his studies at the Leeds Metropolitan University, gaining a BSc Hons in Music technology. He later became a teacher at the college (to present) where he teaches Tabla (to jazz students one to one and group Tabla classes) and on the FE programmes such as BTEC Music Technology. It was the influences of all the music around Bhupinder that gave him a very wide palette of the different musical genres. He used this as a basis to perform with all types of music in and around Leeds in various venues, ranging from the Leeds Town Hall, to the West Yorkshire playhouse to the West Indian Centre and numerous social gatherings. He has also done numerous workshops/master-classes/residencies, a regular teacher in schools in and around Leeds and is also regular teacher in Denmark.

His performances have been very well received and appreciated leaving audiences and musicians surprised at the standard attainable in this country. He has accompanied some prominent artist of the Indian Classical genre including, Sri Dharambir Singh, Sri Kushal Das Ji, Smt. Purnima Chaudhari, Sri Snehashish Mazjumdar, H.H. Swami Gokul Utsav Ji Maharaj, Sri Anindya Banerjee, Dr. Rajeeb Chakraborty, Reena Shrivastav. He also had the great fortune playing two duet performances with his Guru Ji. On the 5 th April 2003, his Guru Ji bestowed the greatest honour a Guru can bless his disciple with by playing before a near full house in the Purcell Room, South Bank centre. Pt Ramesh Misra provided beautiful lehra for Bhupinder to perform a traditional Benares solo and then he sat with his Guru in the second half admiring the Maestro at work. Later on that year, he played to the Tabla players and other musicians of Benares in Benares, India where he felt blessed and honoured that he had this opportunity.

He has also played cross-culturally with many different styles of music including, flamenco guitarist Eduardo Neibla, Portuguese percussion maestro Rui Junior, popular mainstream artists such as, soul singer Jocelyn Brown, mercury award nominee band, Black Star Liner, Dj's of hip-hop/drum'n'bass backgrounds.

Bhupinder's other major project is as a partner in a Production company called Pinjab - a diverse, creative production unit. Pinjab have recorded numerous scores for productions including for Phoenix Dance Co., Derby Playhouse Theatre Production, C4 film, Leeds international film festival, Samyo and many more shows. Pinjab currently put on a special night in Leeds called Kushboo (www.clubkushboo.com) where the talent of the producers and artists is showcased.
