PROJECTS

colour_strip_03FIND YOUR TALENT

Punjabi School GroupSince September 2009 SAA-uk has received access to funding from the national ‘Find Your Talent’ project. The project’s aim is to offer young people opportunities within the arts and to help them explore the cultural opportunities available to them in Leeds and the surrounding area. SAA-uk’s work has so far brought guitar workshops to Shakespeare Primary School, African music workshops to New Wortley Community Centre as well as trips to SAA-uk Concerts and even onstage guest appearances from some of our young participants!

Since January, we have been undergoing a short project with members of the Punjabi Language School who meet at the GNNSJ Sikh Temple in Beeston on Wednesday evenings. The project involved a trip to the Carriageworks Theatre on February 4th to see a production of George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’. The evening was an enjoyable success; most thoroughly enjoyed the production and several participants said that it was the first time they had attended the theatre.

The trip was followed by a day long workshop at the GNNSJ temple lead by leading Storyteller and drama coach Ursula Holden Gill. The day included games based on Animal Farm, looking at representing animal types and characteristics. The day ended with mask making and a full performance bringing all aspects of the day together. All participants worked hard throughout the workshop and enjoyed taking on new challenges and making new friends. Several of the group have expressed an interest in the Arts Award which SAA-uk will help them pursue in the coming months.
